Jijiga, January 2, 2010 – The Somali State HIV/AIDS
Prevention and Control Bureau said community conversations on HIV/AIDS
have been carried out in 1,260 Kebeles of the state so as to prevent the
spread of the virus.
Social Affairs Standing Committee of the State Council is visiting
activities carried out to prevent and control HIV/AIDS in the state.
Speaking on the occasion, Bureau Acting Head, Mohamed Ahmed, said the
conversations have been carried out over the past six months in 67 per
cent of the Kebeles in the state.
According to Mohamed, more than 24,000 people are living with HIV/AIDS
in the state and 1,057 of them have begun attending antiretroviral
therapy (ART) in 32 health centers.
Some people living with the virus have provided awareness raising
education to the community in Jijiga, Degehabur, Shinle and Gode so as
to assist the efforts being made to curb the spread of the virus, he
said.
Members of the team will visit HIV/AIDS prevention activities carried
out on in Jijiga and Liben zones as well as provide education to the
community.
