Upper House Urges Greater Participation By Women In Politics

Hargeysa, Somaliland, January 02, 2010 (SL Times) – The Upper House’s Standing Committee has advised that greater efforts should be made to enable women to take part in the political process in Somaliland.
In their report this week, the Standing Committee said that they particularly became convinced of the urgent need for greater involvement by women in the country’s political process after they held meetings with the women umbrella organization NAGAAD.
The Standing Committee also said that steps should be taken against members of the Upper House, including the secretary of the Upper House, who participated in an HIV/AIDS meeting in Djibouti last month.
The Standing Committee stressed that the Upper House should be consistent in applying its laws and regulations, and if steps are not taken against those who went to Djibouti, it will be difficult to take steps against others who trample on the laws in the future.
