Sheikh Sharif’s Parliamentarians Say Speaker’s Term Expired

Mogadishu, Somalia, January 16, 2010 – (SL Times) – About 60 members of Sheikh Sharif’s parliament declared that the term of their current Speaker, Mr. Adan Madoobe, has expired and that parliament should meet and elect a new leader.
The 60 members made this announcement in a statement that they released to the press after meeting in a hotel in Mogadishu. Mr. Adan Madoobe and his supporters insist that his term has not expired and that his term expires only when the president’s term expires.
Sheikh Sharif’s government has a huge parliament of close to 575 members, most of whom live outside the country. Sheikh Sharif’s government controls only a few streets in the capital Mogadishu, therefore whatever laws his parliament passes stand little chance of being enforced.
