Al-Shabaab Trying To Slip Into Somaliland

Hargeysa, Somaliland, January 23, 2010 (SL Times) – A contingent of al-Shabaab terrorists have recently left Mogadishu and arrived at an area between Dhahar in eastern Sanag region and Puntland. They are now trying to enter Somaliland so they could carry out terrorist operations.

According to reliable sources, al-Shabaab militants have reached a place called Gal-gala where a man called Atam is hosting them. Atam is the same man who was behind the abduction, in 2008, of a German national who was employed by German Agro Action (GAA).

Most of the members of this al-Shabaab contingent who are planning to infiltrate Somaliland are believed to be natives of Somaliland’s central regions who were trained in terrorist activities in Mogadishu. They also include American Somalis.

Al-Shabaab executed three suicide attacks in October 2008 within minutes of each other. The attacks targeted the presidential palace, the Ethiopian trade office and a United Nations office. More than twenty people were killed in that attack. Al-Shabaab has threatened to attack Somaliland several times since then.
