Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, January 30, 2010 – African
Foreign Ministers gathered for the African Union summit continued their
deliberations on Friday in Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa where they
embarked on discussions to endorse the proposed AU budget and electing
member states for the AU peace and security council, APA learnt here.
The proposed $ 201 million budget for the 2010 for the AU commission was
also on a top agenda during the Permanent Representative Committee
meeting early this week.
The ministers who started their deliberations on Thursday are reported
to have allocated ample time to discuss the proposed budget where some
delegates are reported to have opposed it saying that the proposed
budget is “much” citing the current economic situation of the continent,
according to observers attending the closed session.
The 2010 budget shows a 23 per cent increase as compared to the 2009
budget.
“However, the gathering ministers are expected to give a green light for
the budget taking into consideration the price hike on many commodities
and task the AU is confronting continentally with additional staff
members that the previous year,” said observers at the meeting.
The other top agenda at the on going discussion is electing 15 new
members for the peace and Security Council (PSC), which deals with peace
and security affairs in the continent.
In 2007, five member states were elected for three-year term, while 10
others elected in 2008 for two years.
Members are elected on a regional basis, three representatives from
central Africa, three from East Africa, two from North Africa,3 from
Southern Africa, and four from West Africa.
10 member states are elected for a term of two years, and five others
for three years terms.
