Mogadishu, Somalia, February 06, 2010 (SL Times) – The leader of Hizb
al-Islam, Hasan Dahir Aweys confirmed that his deputy, Hasan Turki, had
left Hizb al-Islam and joined al-Shabaab.
Aweys also admitted that individuals from Ras Kamboni faction defected
from Hizb al-Islam and joined al-Shabaab, but he denied that the whole
Ras Kamboni faction which was one of the factions that formed Hizb
al-Islam had all defected. Clearly unhappy at what happened, Aweys
accused al-Shabaab of breaking an agreement between al-Shabaab and Hizb
al-Islam which said that neither side will recruit members from the
ranks of the other. The Spokesman of al-Shabaab, Ali Dheere, denied that
there was an agreement between al-Shabaab and Hizb al-Islam that said
neither side could recruit the other side’s militias.
In further evidence of the rift between al-Shabaab and Hizb al-Islam,
al-Shabaab was reported to have been behind a hand grenade that was
lobbed at the residence of one of Hizb al-Islam’s commanders, Barre Ali
Barre, in Mogadishu.
