Las Qoray, Somaliland, February 06, 2010 (SL Times) – A Libyan owned but
North Korean registered ship was hijacked by Somali pirates and was
brought close to the town of Las Qoray in eastern Somaliland.
Since some of the hijackers were from Las Qoray, they thought they would
get the logistical and armed support that they would need to start
ransom negotiations.
Fortunately, the people of Las Qoray refused to cooperate with the
hijackers and told them to leave their waters. The hijackers initially
resisted and were able to rally a few of the area’s residents to their
side, but this gimmick did not work, since many more people were against
them. So the hijackers left and moved with their ship in an eastward
direction to Puntland, where they are much more likely to get support
from the people on land. This is clear evidence, if evidence was ever
needed, that piracy needs land support in order to succeed.
