Somaliland And International Agencies Wrap Up Their Meeting

Hargeysa, Somaliland, February 20, 2010 (SL Times) – A meeting between international agencies and Somaliland’s government ended Tuesday. The meeting took place at Ambassador Hotel and went on for three days. The purpose of the meeting was to evaluate the projects undertaken by international organizations in Somaliland for the past two years as well as projects marked for the next three years. After the meeting was concluded, Somaliland Minister of Planning, Ali Ibrahim Muhammad (Sanyare) held a press conference in which he was accompanied by Mark Bowden (UN Humanitarian Coordinator), Mr. Chris (World Bank) and representatives of other organizations.
The Minister of Planning said the main reason they gathered here is to look at the projects of the last two years as well as those planned for the next three years, and to see if they are appropriate for Somaliland. The minister also said that their focus will be on education, drilling wells, roads, airports, seaports, livestock, agriculture and the environment.
Mr. Chris, a World Bank representative, said it was a productive three days in which Somaliland’s ministries, parliament, Upper House, and international staff all participated.
Mr. Mark Bowden said it is important that Somaliland’s progress should be appreciated. He also said that strengthening Somaliland’s relations with the international community was among the topics that were discussed.
A representative of the European Union said the European Union always supports Somaliland’s development and promised to release assistance funds. She pointed out that they had seven representatives and they were happy with way the meeting went.
The international bodies that participated in the meeting were: the UN, the European Union, and the World Bank.
