Motherwell, March 20, 2010 – THE Port Elizabeth High Court sentenced a Motherwell man to an effective 22 years’ imprisonment yesterday for murdering a Somali shop owner three years ago.

Dumisani Makuleni, 20, of Gotyiba Street, pleaded guilty to murder, attempted robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition.

He was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment for attempted robbery, 22 for murder, 10 for unlawful possession of a firearm and eight for possession of ammunition, with sentences to run concurrently

According to the indictment, on November 6, 2007, Makuleni went to Wali Ahmed’s shop to rob him. He was carrying a 9mm pistol. He shot and killed Ahmed.

Judge Phakamisa Tshiki said the crime Makuleni had committed was prevalent in Port Elizabeth and was mostly committed by youngsters.
