Dr Laura Hammond, of the School of Oriental and African Studies, details how Somaliland's diaspora is engaging with politics at home

The Peace, Unity and Development party, known as Kulmiye, is the most successful in Somaliland at raising funds for campaigning

Hargeysa, Somaliland, April 3, 2010 (SL Times)
The former British protectorate of Somaliland, which since 1991 has been functioning as a de facto (if unrecognized) state, is now at a political crossroads. A presidential election that was to have taken place in 2008 has been postponed repeatedly amid technical and political difficulties with voter registration. With each postponement, a political crisis has ensued. In September 2009 violence broke out in demonstrations in Hargeysa, the capital city, leaving three people dead. Yet rather than allow the violence to escalate and permanently derail the elections, Somaliland's political parties, legislature, civil society and members of the diaspora (with some support from the international donor community) have come together to find a path back to negotiation.

By Charles Tannock

Two decades ago, Ethiopia was a Cold War battlefield. On the ideological map of the world, it was Soviet territory, a land of famine, dictatorship, and civil war. But, with the overthrow of Mengistu Haile Mariam’s Marxist-Leninist dictatorship in 1991, Ethiopia began to transform itself. Today, it ranks among the five fastest-growing economies in the world, and is a bastion of regional stability.

Somaliland FM: Lack of resources is eroding our influence on regional stability

Rachelle Kliger

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, April 3, 2010 - Somalia is suffering on many fronts. The transitional government is engaged in an ongoing conflict with radical Islamists who risk turning the country into a haven for Al-Qa’ida inspired groups. The Horn of Africa nation is afflicted by a dire food shortage, inflation and a spate of piracy.

But as Somalia continues to wallow in violence, some eye a solution in Somaliland, a relatively quiet and stable autonomous region in the north of the country which, while it has not been recognized internationally as a country, is considered a de facto state.

An armed pirate looks at a cargo ship anchored offshore in northeastern Somalia

By Nick Wadhams
Nairobi, Kenya, April 3, 2010 – The pirate is sitting in the backseat of my car. We are parked in the basement lot of a Nairobi mall; the Muzak version of Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" echoes across the concrete. The man, who calls himself Ahmad, tells me he helped hijack six ships off Somalia before he quit the trade in November because his wife left him for another pirate. He starts to cry and hides his face with his hands. "I felt that I could murder that man," Ahmad says. "My town was dominated by him. I thought the best thing was to run away from that place before I killed someone."

People & Power - Best Kept Secret - 28 Oct 07- Part 2

Somaliland Deserves International Recognition

I traveled to Somaliland in June of this year at the end of 2 difficult years of my life......
It was a little intimidating being there at the start (Somaliland is an unrecognized state within Somalia) but I found a people consumed with demonstrating their civility and peacefulness, in very testing circumstances.
Having been there and spent time with the Somalilanders, I believe Somaliland deserves International Recognition of its Independence and that Countries that will not accept the de facto separation from the mess that is Somalia need to be pressed for a fuller explanation as to why they wont support 20 years of peaceful growth in a very difficult region.
