Somaliland Deputy Planning Minister Ahmed Hashi Halts UNDP Seminar

Hargeysa, Somaliland, April 10, 2010 (SL Times) – A seminar held by the UNDP which brought together Somaliland and UN officials was abruptly brought to a halt by Somaliland Deputy Planning Minister Ahmed Hashi when it became obvious that instead of discussing a development specific to Somaliland, the UNDP was using a plan designed for Somalia. The UNDP’s presentation of a plan that is not specific to Somaliland was seen as a infringement of prior understandings between the Somaliland government and the UNDP which deals with Somaliland as an existing separate entity but not as part of Somalia.
The current fiasco by the UNDP comes only a couple of months after another disastrous meeting between the UN and Somaliland in which the Egyptian ambassador claimed in Somaliland’s capital that Somaliland is part of Somalia. Many Somalilanders are still smarting from the Egyptian ambassador’s insult and do not consider the plan unveiled by the UNDP any less insulting.
