NORTHWOOD HEADQUARTERS England, June 19, 2010 – How do you tell the difference between a Somali pirate in a small boat and a largely identical but innocent fisherman? It all comes down to the ladders.

Rooney, whose performance had spluttered uncharacteristically, reacted by shouting into a television camera: "Nice to see your own fans booing you. If that's what loyal support is ... for fuck's sake."

Somali nationalism

Somali nationalism was the base of the Somali State. The reason d’etre of the union between Somalia and Somaliland to form the Somali Republic was the 1960 idealistic vision of bringing all the colonized Somali territories (French Somaliland (Djibouti), the Northern Frontier District (NFD) of Kenya, the Ogaden of Ethiopia, Italian Somalia and British Somaliland Protectorate) under the fold of one flag with a symbolic five pointed star.

Conflict management in the Horn of Africa has been relatively unsuccessful. Foreign colonialism created boundaries that have yet to be resolved, and newly independent nations engaged in conflicts responsible for human rights atrocities, child conscription, and collapse of state infrastructure. Cold War superpower intervention did little more than arm opposing parties with millions of dollars in military weapons that continue to propagate violence and death. Oppressive regimes rise and fall in the form of communist juntas, dictators, and rivaling militias, warlords, and clan leaders. Ethiopia and Eritrea continue to slaughter one another with little reprieve, and Somalia is a failed state.

Somaliland Deserves International Recognitionn

I traveled to Somaliland in June of this year at the end of 2 difficult years of my life......
It was a little intimidating being there at the start (Somaliland is an unrecognized state within Somalia) but I found a people consumed with demonstrating their civility and peacefulness, in very testing circumstances.
Having been there and spent time with the Somalilanders, I believe Somaliland deserves International Recognition of its Independence and that Countries that will not accept the de facto separation from the mess that is Somalia need to be pressed for a fuller explanation as to why they wont support 20 years of peaceful growth in a very difficult region.
