Somaliland Election 2010: Keep the momentum!

Somaliland Recognition Thru UDUB Party Administration Is Imminent

Somaliland Recognition Thru UDUB Party Administration Is Imminent

By: Mohammed Ahmed Ali

After gaining political experience during the infancy of Somaliland republic , UDUB ,the incumbent party has acquired both skills and political lobbying for the recognition of Somaliland by both its immediate neighbors and its  long term friends  from Europe and North America who are keeping a close watch on the outcome of the coming presidential elections.

UDUB who is the only party that is diverse in both representation of the indigenous Somaliland clans as well moderate Muslim Sufi,  has the edge over the opposition parties on the territorial landscape that its supporters come from  – from Sanaag  Sool, Togdheer  and Awdal.  UDUD has also the edge over the other parties because this party is based on the support of no single clan but on all Somaliland people, compared to the other parties who are counting on their voters to come from the clan lineage to their party leaders.

I believe that Somaliland can, at this stage be kept together by multi ethnic administration rather than clan dominated one.  Neither Kulmiye nor UCID parties have major representation of the other clans that inhabit in the country with the exception of few nominal figures pasted on top of the party leadership for the sake of public influence.

Somaliland is a young nation that does not need to be ruled dominantly by any major clan of the three dominant clans of the country as this could lead to violence and possible disintegration of the country.  ( Ilma  ina adeeri  isma indha buuxiso ) is a Somali proverb which roughly translates  to : cousins do not see eye to eye in success... This is phenomenon that has always been in the blood stream of the people of Somaliland.

I say that, and have been writing and posting and disseminating through many different venues:

‘We are not ready for changing a bad government with a worst one. We need to display sense of patience and tolerance until we are ready for real change and pure democracy. Blaming the current government on un-employment and widespread hunger, as some of my readers commented recently in one of my articles, is irrelevant to the current situation in the country. Recession is everywhere and even  the rich countries are suffering from  the current world economic depression’.

I conclude that, Somaliland elites should not use the poor and the young to achieve their own political goals through the current elections as this could lead Somaliland into a failed state like Somalia.
