Teachers Demonstrate For Lack Of Pay

Hargeysa, Somaliland, July 17, 2010 (SL Times) – Some Somaliland teachers of middle and elementary schools staged a demonstration in between the ministries of education and interior to draw attention to the fact that they had not received their salaries for three months. The teachers said that they are having difficult time to survive and pay their bills because of lack of salaries. Speaking in the name of the teachers, Mr Abdikarin Omar Abdi made the following requests to the government:

1-     To pay the salaries that are owed  to the teachers within a week since the country is functioning normally and there is no reason to withhold back the salaries of teachers

2-     To look into the 42 administrators whose number is too big and who have corrupted the administration of the schools

3-     To appoint supervisors who go to the schools and check if the administrators are doing their job since all the officials who used to do spot checks on the performance of administrators have all been disbanded

4-     To institute a retirement system that pays teachers a portion of their salary after working for decades  and reaching old age

Somaliland Commander of Police, Gen. Muhammad Saqadhi Dubad, who passed by as the demonstration was in progress, listened to the complaints of the teachers and promised to pass their grievances to the government.
