Jijiga, Jan 29, 2011 – The Somali State Police Commission has reportedly detained a man while trying to allegedly smuggle 103,900 USD to the Somaliland via Togochale town.

The penitentiary system in Somaliland is set for increased financial support as western countries recognize Hargeysa’s successful work at combating piracy in the Horn of Africa
Danish Foreign Minister Lene Espersen (K), together with Development Søren Pind (V) provide financial support to renovate a prison in Somaliland, where condemned Somali pirates can be put behind bars. The newspaper Berlingske Tidende [reports].

Following its self-declared independence from Somalia in 1991 it has its own de facto parliament, capital, flag, currency, a university and multiparty elections.  As a result, Somaliland is viewed as an area in development. But droughts are causing an acute humanitarian emergency.

Hargeysa, Somaliland, January 29, 2011 (SL Times) – The editor of Waaheen newspaper, Mr Mohamud Abdi Jama (Xuuto) was moved this week from the police's central station in Hargeisa to the new jail in central Hargeisa. Before being transferred, the editor was held for four days at the police station.

The four cheetah cubs have been taken in by UK based Born Free Foundation. The organization’s office is located in front of the French Embassy.

Dire Dawa, Ethiopia, January 29, 2011 – Officials at the Ethiopian Revenues and Customs Authority (ERCA) handed over four cheetah cubs to the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority (EWCA) that were confiscated last week in Denbel Arapea, in Dire Dawa City, while allegedly being smuggled to Somaliland.
