Waaheen Newspaper Editor Transferred To Central Jail

Hargeysa, Somaliland, January 29, 2011 (SL Times) – The editor of Waaheen newspaper, Mr Mohamud Abdi Jama (Xuuto) was moved this week from the police's central station in Hargeisa to the new jail in central Hargeisa. Before being transferred, the editor was held for four days at the police station.
Waaheen’s editor was sentenced in Jan.22 to three years in jail and was fined $1000 by a court in Hargeisa.
Many Somalilanders are unhappy with the jailing of Waaheen's editor and contend that the government has not followed the press law that was passed by both the parliament and the upper House, and that was signed by the former president. They also see the sentence as proof of the government’s determination to impose on the press a draconian law that it has been preparing for a while.
