Somaliland Elder Statesman Gives Lessons In Courage And Wisdom

Hargeysa, Somaliland, April 30, 2011 (SL Times) – Somaliland elder statesman Haji Abdikarim Hussein Yusuf (a.k.a Abdi Warabe) gave an interesting two part interview to the Somali language newspaper Haatuf this week.
Haji Abdikarim provided snippets from his own life, Somaliland history as well as current events. He narrated a very touching story of how he was sent with two of his kinsmen to exact revenge on a man who had killed his (i.e Abdikarim Hussein’s) father but that once they met the man and they had an opportunity to kill him, Haji Abdikarim Hussein changed his mind and decided not to take revenge on him. The reason he did so was that the man had treated them so well, and showed them great consideration and hospitality, Haji Abdikarim Hussein just could not bring himself to kill such a man.
Haji Abdikarim Hussein also revealed in the interview how he got the nickname “Hyena”. He said he acquired it due to an incident that happened when he was young. A group of nomads saw him watching over a herd of camels, and thought that given his very young age, it would be an easy task to dispossess him of the herd. But when they actually tried to do, he put up a ferocious fight shooting and injuring one of the attackers, and was able to prevent the attackers from walking away with his herd. Upon reaching their own compound, the camel rustlers were asked what happened, and one of them said, “we tried to loot some camels that we thought were protected by a young lad, but it turned out that they were protected by a hyena.”
