TOTAL Employees Upset Over Not Being Paid

Berbera, Somaliland, May 28, 2011 (SL Times) Ė The abrupt termination of TOTALís contract for running the fuel tanks in Berbera has upset some of the workers at those fuel tanks. More specifically, the workers are saying that since TOTALís contract has ended, there is nobody for them to talk with about money that TOTAL owes them, and the government has not addressed the question. Some of the workers have caused disturbances in the area of the tank fuels in protest of what they saw as infringement on their rights. Traffic in the area was jammed due to a large number of trucks that came to collect fuel.
The abrupt decision to end TOTALís contract shows weaknesses within Somaliland governmentís decision-making process. There was hardly any public input or discussion of the impact of the decision on the public. No plans were made for the transition period, and no steps were taken to mitigate possible problems that could arise from the decision.
