Somaliland First Lady Cuts Ribbons For New Constructions At Orphanage, African Children’s Day Celebrated

Hargeysa, Somaliland, June 18, 2011 (SL Times) – African children’s day was celebrated on June 16th in Somaliland’s capital Hargeysa. The event took place at Hargeisa’s orphanage center.
The event was put together by Caritas and Somaliland’s first lady, Amina Weris Sheikh Mohamed Jirde, and was attended by the Minister of Education, Zam Zam Abdi Adan, the Chairman of the anti-corruption committee, Ahmed Muhumed Madar, the commander of the custodial corps, Mohammed Husein Hirane, the Governor of Hargeysa region, Ahmed Omar Abdillahi (Hamarji), the Director of Humanitarian activities, Amina Mohamud Diriye, Mohamed Hassan Jidhif (representing Mercy Corps), and officials from Caritas, UNICEF, NOW as well as other distinguished guests. Representatives from Oomaar company which contributes to the orphanage were also present.
The Director of the orphanage, Asha Mohamud Qalib gave an introduction about the history of the orphanage and its current situation.
Somaliland first lady, Amina Weris, stressed the importance that Somaliland’s government gives to children, especially the ones who live in orphanages. She also thanked the companies, NGOs, and individuals who support the orphanage.
The minister of education, Zam Zam Abdi Adan, the commander of the custodial corps, Muhammad Huseen Hirane, the Governor of Hargeisa region, Ahmed Omar Abdillahi (Hamarji) as well as other officials spoke to the audience and they all highlighted the importance of the occasion.
The children at the orphanage expressed their happiness with songs, including Somaliland’s national anthem, and theatrical performances.
The women’s organization NOW donated a variety of food supplies to the orphanage to mark the occasion.
Somaliland’s first lady, Amina Weris, cut the ribbon to a new dining hall for the children, and two classrooms which were constructed for the orphanage children by Mercy Corps. She also thanked the organization that built the hall and the two classes.
