Al-Shabaab Leaves Mogadishu

Mogadishu, Somalia, August 6, 2011 – The Somali Islamist group Al-Shabaab has withdrawn its fighters from Mogadishu. It says it is regrouping, while the government claims a military victory over it.

Following the collapse of its last central government 20 years ago, Somalia broke apart into Somalia proper in the south and Puntland and Somaliland in the north. Much of Somalia proper is controlled by Al-Shabaab.
