Islamists Face Crackdown – Somali President |
||
|
Mogadishu, Somalia, August 13, 2011 – The Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has pledged everything in his government’s power to rid Somalia of the radical Islamist group Al-Shabaab. He was speaking in the Tanzanian capital Dar el-Salaam on Wednesday a few days after forces of the African Union helped the Somali army to expel Al-Shabaab from Mogadishu. In the period since the collapse of its last central government in 1991, Somalia has been faring as an assemblage of three separate entities: Puntland and Somaliland in the north and Somalia proper in the south. Only the latter one is internationally recognized. Much of it is still controlled by Al-Shabaab, which prevents food aid from getting through. Source: The Voice of Russia
