Demonstration Against Parliament

Hargeysa, Somaliland, November 19, 2011 (SL Times) – A demonstration took place in front of parliament in Hargeysa. The demonstrators were opposed to a law recently passed by parliament which suspended the existing voter-registration rolls and prescribed that municipal elections to take place without voter-registration.
The demonstrators appealed to the Upper House to repudiate that law. Police collected the placards from the demonstrators and dispersed them.
Many Somalilanders see the move to have municipal elections without voter registration as an attempt to take the country backward and a ruse by the current parliamentarians to ensure that they remain in office.
