Djibouti Outpost Behind Somalia Rescue Is Part of New Defense Strategy

Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta, standing, in a visit last month to Camp Lemonier in Djibouti, whose size and location allow for what he calls “economy of force.”

Djibouti, January 28, 2012 – An austere Pentagon outpost in the hardscrabble desert on the Horn of Africa proved serendipitously ideal as a launching pad for Tuesday’s commando raid that freed two aid workers held in Somalia.
The use of the base, Camp Lemonier in neighboring Djibouti, is also a signpost to the future, as the military focuses on “economy of force” missions that can preserve an American military presence and protect national security interests at relatively low cost.

Taleeh Meeting Brings More Divisions To Dhulbahante

Since the organizers of the Taleeh meeting claim that the main motivation behind it and the declarations that issued from it were designed to help the Dhulbahante clan, now that the parley has ended, it is only fair to ask if it was a positive or negative development for the said clan. Contrary to what the individuals behind the meeting are claiming, we think its results hurt the Dhulbahante community more than it helps it, and here is why.
