By Katrina Manson in Nairobi and Robert

Somali pirates collected an estimated $160m in
ransoms last year. But they are not the only ones
making money. Lawyers and insurers have benefited
too. More controversially, the rise in piracy has
spawned a valuable, ill-regulated and, critics fear,
potentially lethal maritime security industry.

Last week Foreign Secretary William Hague
made a surprise visit to Somalia's capital,
Mogadishu, ahead of an international conference on
Somalia taking place in London this month. The visit
comes at an important juncture for Somalia's
internal politics and its relations with the rest of
the world. Twenty one years without functioning
state institutions has left the country ravaged by
violence, food insecurity, terrorism and extreme
poverty.

From Garadag “State”
To London Conference: Mr. Sillanyo’s Checkered
Journey To Power |
|
By Bashir Goth
As Somaliland takes a slide into the unknown, many questions
come to the mind of those of us who advocated and
still believe in the legitimacy of the Somaliland
cause and have a great faith in the ingenuity and
wisdom of the people of Somaliland.
Among the questions that race through the mind is whether
this downward slope brought about by the Somaliland
government’s rush to attend the London Conference on
Somalia, will cause it to free fall into the abyss
or whether the slide will be due to a temporary
misstep after which Somaliland will regain her
balance and will continue the journey with her
renowned stride.

“Somalia’s” Terrorists
Are Invading Somaliland |
|
By
Abdulaziz Al-Mutairi
Terrorists across “Somalia” are gathering at the Buhodle town
of far south-east Somaliland, to establish
safe-haven for their illegal armed operations across
Somaliland and Ethiopia. ONLF, Al-Etihad Al-Islamiya,
Al-Shabaab and tribal militia loyal to Warlord Ali
Khalif Galaydh are building illegal army in the town
to destabilize the region.
Al-Etihad Al-Islamiya and Al-Shabaab are internationally
known terrorist organizations. ONLF is leading
illegal and fruitless struggle against Ethiopia and
violates the human rights. Mainly, religion is the
victim of such extremism where it is been used as a
tool to recruit the uneducated and young Somali boys
in the terrorism business. These terrorist groups
want to enforce Sharia Law in eastern parts of
Ethiopia – mainly dominated by ethnic Somalis.

Obsession With
Recognition Is Diverting Attention From Real
Progress. |
|
By Liban Obsiye
Not a week goes by that I do not read something about
Somaliland recognition. It has become an incurable
obsession for most from this self declared
independent State who believe in its release from
the violent marriage they were tricked into after
independence in 1960. Perhaps they are right in
that they have met all the international
requirements for Statehood. They have also held two
free and fair elections, created State institutions
and are working towards strengthening their
democracy. However, as a long term observer of
events in the region it is easy to conclude that the
passion for independence is not matched by policy
successes on the ground.

Getting Somalia Wrong
- A History Of International Misreading |
|
By Abdi Aynte
Living up to its title, Harper's book shows how (and why) the
international community has misread the situation in
Somalia over the past 20 years. Harper recounts the
U.S. and UN intervention in the early 1990s, which
ended in the now infamous "Black Hawk Down" episode,
where 18 members of the American Special Forces (and
countless Somalis) died in an epic battle across the
dusty streets of Mogadishu.
"[this] was probably the most dramatic example of getting
Somalia wrong," Harper writes. But, in fact, I think
the 1993 events were just the first example of the
book's title. More than 10 years later, Washington
would again misdiagnose Somali conundrums, with
potentially disastrous effect.

Motivations For

The famous quote by Kennedy was: “ask what you
can do for your country and not what your country
can do for you”. This is a patriotic question
that cuts across a chink that separates us with the
idea of civic responsibility, the responsibility
towards one’s own country.
