train Somali troops to protect its coast from toxic

capacity of troops in Somalia, so that they
eventually turn into a national coastguard. Mr.

international waters.

pirate attacks that have disrupted a vital shipping
route off the coast of lawless Somalia and deep into
the Indian ocean.

reached about 50 Ethiopian birr [$2.5]," said Ahmed

The
UK, Somaliland, And Seychelles Show Leadership In Fighting
Piracy While The US, France, And Russia Fail The Test |
For too long,
the news with regard to Somali piracy from the Horn of
Africa has been negative. For too long we have been hearing
about Somali pirates seizing ships and threatening the lives
of innocent individuals. Most Somalis have nothing to do
with piracy; nevertheless, the fact that the pirates are
Somalis tends to associate Somalis in the minds of other
peoples with piracy. This is an established fact that any
Somali who traveled abroad becomes quickly aware of. Of
course, when confronted with this situation a Somali could
say he had nothing to do with it. Fair enough. But this does
not answer the question: what are you doing about it?

A Critical Look At
Sillanyo's Administration |
|
By Eliyas Diriye
Before I venture with my comments let me caution my
readers. Opposing the current regime is not
tantamount to opposing the reclamation of
independence of Somaliland. I am fully aware of the
sensitivity of my fellow citizen when it comes to
addressing thorny issues. The preferred option has
been to hush it and sweep it under the carpet. My
efforts here have been forced by what seems to be a
new collective self delusion that has gripped the
country.
Update on Change
They
say that the direction of a new administration can
be predicted, albeit with care, on how it handles
itself in its maiden days. Sillanyo’s administration
came with a bumper on the shoulders of change
craving citizenry that had sacrificed a lot, waited
for long and prays for change.
A
lot of us rushed with counsel on how the new
administration can capture the moment and deliver
the change that was expected. The president –elect
showed a lot of maturity, tough political leadership
and patience. He slowly separated party politics
from his administration and went on to scout for
talent far and wide. He astounded many critics when
he appointed individuals with established
independence, lack of political baggage and heavy
academic certifications.

We Need An Independent
Commission For The Sahel Cement Dispute
|
|
By Ali
Mohamed
Last week, the Dahabshil Group spearheaded the first
investor’s meeting of the new Sahel Cement Factory,
which took place at Mansoor Hotel in Hargeysa.
Several people spoke at the gathering including the
founder/owner of Dahabshil group, Mr. Mohamed Said
Duale, whom I thought would use the gathering to
tell Somaliland public their side of the story ,
regarding the dispute between Dahashil Group and the
Sahel communities over the proposed new Sahel Cement
Plant in Berbera. However, he failed to deliver a
convincing argument why the Dahabshil Group got the
permit to build the cement in the first place. From
the speech of the founder of Dahabshil group, Mr.
Duale, I was able to glean the following relevant
information:

The President Of
Somaliland Republic At The London Conference: A True
Democrat Surrounded By Eats-African Autocrats! |
|
By
Architectural-Eng. Hussein Adan Igeh |Hussein Deyr |UK|
1. The leader of East-Africa’s Beacon of Peace and Democracy
In retrospect
to the London Conference of last month, one of the most inevitable outcomes of
the London Conference was the special status attributed to the delegation
from Somaliland Republic, as an internationally
recognised country
in the midst of the
global community.
The way in which President Ahmed Silanyo and his delegation prepared, lobbied
and presented the Somaliland’s case was an ultimate
testimony to the character, nature and quality of Somaliland’s people, compared
with their brotherly populations in the neighbouring countries in the region.

Calling A Spade A
Spade |
|
By Ahmed I.
Hassan – Part 5
The Club of Vandals
Somalis, unfortunately, seem to be prone to
disasters, both manmade and natural. However, in
their rather unenviable history, three catastrophes
that befell on them glaringly stick out. The
ill-effects of these three cataclysms are still
bedeviling Somalis everywhere with no dependable end
of the hardships in sight.
The First Catastrophe: It began at the start of the
last century and it did not come into a merciful
conclusion until twenty one years later in 1921.
A man who had claimed to be a Somali Muslim Scholar
(a Mullah of sorts) started what he had presented as
a struggle to get rid the land of the British
colonialism, which—at the time, for a quarter of a
century before and for half a century hence—was
Somaliland’s disgrace and misfortunate to be the
object.
His name was Mohamed Abdulle Hassan.
