Sheikh Sharif Lauds Coming Talks With Somaliland

Mogadishu, Somalia, April 14, 2012 (SL Times) – The President of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia (TFG), Sheikh Sharif said the fact that Somaliland and Somalia will hold talks after 21 years is a victory for Somalis. He stressed that talking to each other is the way to solve problems whether between Somaliland and the south or between southerners themselves.
He also revealed that Mogadishu will be the location where the meeting for the selection of a new government will take place. Sheikh Sharif said this in a speech at Wardhiigley neighborhood in Mogadishu. He also urged the people of Mogadishu who are living in houses that do not belong to them to vacate those properties.
Sheikh Sharif has been sending mixed messages regarding Somaliland. On the one hand, he often alludes to Somaliland’s grievances, as if he sympathizes with Somaliland. But on the other hand, he associates with people like Gen. Mohamed Ali Samater who is wanted for war crimes in Somaliland. He also says Somalia’s unity is sacred, which is a code word for opposing Somaliland’s independence.
