Hargeysa, Somaliland, April 28, 2012 (SL Times) – Dr Luca Alinovi, the Country Representative for FAO, met the Somaliland President, Mr Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud Sillanyo at the Presidency on Tuesday 17th April 2012 along with the Somaliland Ministers of Livestock and Fisheries/Marine Resources Dr Abdi Aw Dahir Ali and Abdullahi Hussein Osman Geljire respectively. The ministers briefed the president on the good working relationship and improved partnership between FAO and the government ministries as well as FAO’s assistance to Somaliland. Dr Luca Alinovi, the FAO Country Representative commended the Somaliland government for maintaining peace and stability in the country as well as creating a conducive working environment for UN & international organizations to easily access and deliver the humanitarian and development assistance to the Somaliland Communities in all regions. The FAO Country Representative gave to the Somaliland President an overview of the FAO interventions in Somaliland (i.e. ongoing planned FAO assistance to Somaliland) which is being aligned with the Somaliland National Development Plan & Vision for 2030 and at the same time in accordance with the FAO’s strategic plans. The Somaliland President, Mr Ahmed Mohamoud Sillanyo thanked FAO and Dr Luca Alinovi, the FAO Country Representative, for supporting Somaliland’s institutions including the ministries aiming to improve the livelihoods of the Somaliland people. In the course of the meeting at the Presidency, the Somaliland government reaffirmed its willingness to make available an adequate land for FAO to be used for its future offices as well as research site in Hargeysa. During the two-day FAO delegation mission in Hargeysa led by FAO Country Representative, Dr. Luca Alinovi, the following main activities were accomplished: 1. A consultative meeting with the ministries of planning, livestock, fisheries, agriculture & environment on the Intern Assistance Plan for Somaliland. 2. Handover ceremony on completion for construction and rehabilitation of Hargeysa Livestock Market facilities in close collaboration with the government. 3. Ceremony on the completion on the emergency livestock treatment intervention and for launching plan of massive vaccination for 4,000,000 livestock in all Somaliland regions from the PPR (Pest Petit Ruminants) with the ministry of livestock that implements the projects. 4. Discussed the construction of the modern public slaughter house in Burao as well as plans for extension of added values on animal by-products through innovation techniques to major Somaliland regions (i.e. bone-crafts, soap-making and others. Apart from the recent two-day mission, the FAO Country Representative frequently visits the country for monitoring and consultations/coordination on FAO programmes in Somaliland.
