A
Giant Passes Away |
The sudden
death of Dr Abdishakur Sheikh Ali Jawhar in a car accident
has resulted in outpouring of eulogies and articles about
him. But no matter how many words are written and how much
ink is spilled on his memory, it is difficult to do justice
to such a man. He was unique in every sense of the word.
Born to a religious family, he was open to modern education
and was at ease in the modern world. He did not let all that
education, however, get to his head. He remained who he was:
a modest and unpretentious man who never abandoned common
sense as intellectuals often do.

Spreading The Word |

By Liban
Obsiye
While speaking with my young teenage cousin over
supper at home I was surprised when he asked me to
change the channel we were watching to the
Somaliland National Television (SLNTV) channel to
watch the day’s news. I giggled and teased that he
barely spoke Somali since he was born and raised in
East London. But as it turned out the joke was on
me. SLNTV has an English translation of the news
some time after its main bulletin in the national
Somali language in the evening. At first I was
surprised but as the news went on I was very
impressed.

Ali Mohamed
Twenty-one years ago this month, Somaliland, the
former British Somaliland, which united with former
Italian Somaliland in 1960 to form the Republic of
Somalia, declared its independence after the ousting
of the tyrannical regime of Siyad Barre. The
dictator used his brutal military force including
fighter jets to bomb civilian population into
submission and to deny people yearning for freedom.
Somalilanders fought a bitter battle to break away
from the rest of Somalia.
