UN Envoy In Somalia Concerned Over Violent Clashes In Hargeysa

Nairobi, Kenya, May 19, 2012 – The United Nations envoy in Somalia, Augustine P. Mahiga, today expressed concern over recent violent clashes in Hargeysa, located in Somaliland, between Somaliland security forces and citizens which allegedly resulted in the deaths on both sides.

UNHCR/NRC PRESS RELEASE
A total of 50 permanent shelters, which will benefit 300 people, were constructed by members of the community with the training, technical assistance and supervision of NRC. The Somaliland Government was also instrumental in the success of the project.

On the occasion of 18th May 2012 Somaliland Society in Europe (SSE) wants to extend its heart felt wishes to all the nationals of the Republic of Somaliland, both inside the country and in the Diaspora.
The historic day of 18th May 1991 marked the beginning of a new era for the people of Somaliland and indeed for the people of the Horn of Africa; and an end to an illegitimate union with Somalia. In addition to its 3.5 million people, Somaliland has over the past 21 years offered sanctuary to people fleeing violence, wars and famine.

Mogadishu, Somalia, May 19, 2012 – Somalia's embattled central government will not argue with semi-autonomous Puntland over potential oil revenues for fear of scuttling a fragile peace process, but a top official said on Monday the law made clear control lay with Mogadishu.

Port Louis, May 19, 2012 – Mauritius said on Friday it has agreed to prosecute Somali pirates, helping overcome one of the hurdles to cracking down on the wave of piracy that has hit international shipping.
The island nation said it had reached agreement with Somalia, and the semi-autonomous regions of Somaliland and Puntland, to accept suspected pirates for prosecution and trial starting in June.

Mogadishu, Somalia, May 19, 2012 – Somali fisherman pleaded Friday for international navies protecting shipping to halt air strikes on coastal villages, after the EU Naval Force struck a pirate base for the first time.
An attack helicopter staged a nighttime raid on the Somali coastline Tuesday, the first since the European Union authorized such strikes, destroying several small boats that the force said were part of pirate operations.
But fishermen on the impoverished coast said that their boats had also been destroyed, and that they feared being caught up in further attacks aimed to damage pirate operations.

Toronto, CA, May 19, 2012 — Fourteen months ago, officials in Somalia announced that a former Toronto resident turned Islamist terrorist named Omar Shafik Hammami had been killed in Mogadishu, bringing an end to his jihadi adventure.
But his body could not be found and when Hammami resurfaced a month later in a video in which he taunted the U.S. to make him a martyr, ABC News wryly reported that he was not dead “yet.”

Mogadishu, Somalia, May 19, 2012 – Horn Petroleum Corp has suspended drilling at its Shabeel well in Somalia's Puntland and said it will move the drilling rig away from the area before reaching the planned depth of 3800 meters.
The well in the Dharoor valley hit a metamorphic basement at a depth of 3,430 meters, Horn Petroleum said in a statement on Thursday. Basement is the rock layer below which economic oil or natural gas reservoirs are unlikely to be found.

Condolences

We received with great sadness the news that Dr Abdishakur Sheikh Ali Jawhar had died in a car accident and that his wife, Amina Abdi Jama, was hurt in the accident. The Somaliland Times conveys its deepest condolences to the family and relatives of the deceased. We also pray for a speedy recovery to his wife.

A Giant Passes Away

The sudden death of Dr Abdishakur Sheikh Ali Jawhar in a car accident has resulted in outpouring of eulogies and articles about him. But no matter how many words are written and how much ink is spilled on his memory, it is difficult to do justice to such a man. He was unique in every sense of the word. Born to a religious family, he was open to modern education and was at ease in the modern world. He did not let all that education, however, get to his head. He remained who he was: a modest and unpretentious man who never abandoned common sense as intellectuals often do.

Spreading The Word

While speaking with my young teenage cousin over supper at home I was surprised when he asked me to change the channel we were watching to the Somaliland National Television (SLNTV) channel to watch the day’s news. I giggled and teased that he barely spoke Somali since he was born and raised in East London. But as it turned out the joke was on me. SLNTV has an English translation of the news some time after its main bulletin in the national Somali language in the evening. At first I was surprised but as the news went on I was very impressed.

Recognize Somaliland

Twenty-one years ago this month, Somaliland, the former British Somaliland, which united with former Italian Somaliland in 1960 to form the Republic of Somalia, declared its independence after the ousting of the tyrannical regime of Siyad Barre. The dictator used his brutal military force including fighter jets to bomb civilian population into submission and to deny people yearning for freedom. Somalilanders fought a bitter battle to break away from the rest of Somalia.
