Mental Illness Hospital Named After Dr Abdishakur Ali Jawhar

Borama, Somaliland, July 14, 2012 (SL Times) – The ministers of health, information, and planning laid the corner stone for a mental illness hospital that is being built in Borama. The hospital will be named after Dr Abdishakur Ali Jawhar who was planning to establish such hospital before he died in a car accident. The project of building the hospital is now in the hands of the family of Sheikh Ali Jawhar, and will specifically be managed by Sheikh Abdillahi Sheikh Ali Jawhar.
Speaking at the ceremony that marked the occasion, the Minister of Information, Abdi Yusuf Duale (Boobe), said Abdishakur Ali Jawhar was one of the few psychiatrists in the country, and the government will pay its share towards building the hospital. He also said they will start programs on government media to raise funds for the hospital.
The Minister of Health, Dr Huseen M. Maxamed (Xoog) made it known that the hospital will not just treat the people of Awdal, or the people of Somaliland, but will treat anybody who has mental illness.
In her speech, Edna Adan asked that since there is a great shortage in staff who know about giving care to mental illness patients, more staff should be trained.
Sheikh Abdillahi Ali Jawhar thanked the government and said he welcomes anyone who wants to contribute to the establishment of the mental illness hospital.
Others who spoke on the occasion included the Minister of Planning, Dr Sa’ad Ali Shire, the Minister of Resettlement, Abdirizaq Ali Osman, the administration of Awdal region, politicians and distinguished guests.
